Kunstwerk "Blauwe Golven" bij Rijnkade in Arnhem

Artwork "Blue Waves" at Rijnkade in Arnhem

The artwork "Blue Waves" (1977) in Arnhem is a national monument and one of the most important environmental artworks of the 1970s in the Netherlands. The Roermondspleinbrug connected the city centre with the growing district Arnhem-Zuid. Artist Peter Struycken received in 1974 from the municipality of Arnhem the commission to shape the area "visually". He chose a waving cobblestone carpet with diagonal blue and white bands. On this site free parking was allowed. The location is exactly at the place where the old harbour used to be. Hence also the wave pattern.
